Man hit with hefty tax bill when authorities discover ‘secret job’ on LinkedIn

Key learning from the news this morning: If you’re going to claim to have no income, you shouldn’t post your offshore job on your LinkedIn profile.
In a fairly good example of someone forgetting that social media profiles are public, a Swedish man has been ordered to pay a $750,000 tax bill after authorities discovered his ‘secret job’ on LinkedIn. He had claimed to have no income for years.
As part of an investigation into his finances, the tax agency surveyed his LinkedIn profile which, despite his claims of joblessness, actually listed him as working for a company in the British Virgin Isles, and having worked there for years.
The agency has ordered him to pay back money going as far as 2008, charging $150,000 per year of unpaid taxes. Ouch.
Tax evaders take note; revenue agencies can read social profiles too.
