When it comes to careers, the grass often looks greener in your neighbour’s garden – or at least the snacks look freer and the pay looks better.

But sometimes things aren’t exactly what they seem. And that perfect looking job is actually incredibly stressful.

CareerCast.com has just released its list of the most overrated and underrated jobs for 2015, based on its own Jobs Rated report.

“High salary potential, excitement and glamour may be trade-offs for the stress, competition and industry volatility inherent in many of the most overrated professions,” says the site.

Among the most overrated are PR manager, event coordinator, attorney, and architect, “not because they aren’t great, rewarding fields – they are. But applying the core criteria of the CareerCast.com Jobs Rated report, there’s perhaps more than meets the eye.” The Jobs Rated report, which ranks jobs based on four core criteria: environment, income, outlook, and stress.

Event coordinator, for example, is one of the fastest growing professions tracked by both the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Jobs Rated report – projected to grow 33% by 2022 – but it’s ranked one of the most stressful jobs every year.

And architect has a high projected growth outlook, but hiring in the industry depends heavily on economic factors. “As the recession demonstrated, construction is especially susceptible to marketplace volatility.”

Attorneys, meanwhile, have a fair hiring outlook but a challenging job market. “An April 2015 New York Times report finds recent law school graduates burdened with debt and taking on other work while searching for opportunities in the legal industry.”

These are the factors CareerCast took into consideration when creating their most overrated jobs. “These can be terrific careers, but understand it’s not all glamour or fun.”

For the most underrated jobs list, CareerCast chose jobs that may not be among the best but that “score well in a variety of categories.” The jobs include accountant, geologist, civil engineer, and physiologist.

“Accountant is an underrated career path with flexibility,” says CareerCast. “Everyone needs their expenses sorted and taxes completed. Thus, an accountant can find full-time work with a single employer, or operate an independent business that contracts to companies and individuals.”

For civil engineers, the 20% growth outlook is good, plus the field scores well for environment and income potential.

The following are the CareerCast.com most overrated underrated jobs for 2015.
